LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

A B2 level is required for English and the other language that is part of the student's programme.

  • - Students with a Flemish secondary school diploma are exempt from demonstrating B2 level for English and/or Dutch.
  • - Students with a Flemish academic bachelor/master entirely taught in Dutch who do not have a Flemish secondary diploma do need to certify a B2 level for English.
  • - Students with a Flemish academic bachelor/master entirely taught in English who do not have a Flemish secondary diploma do need to certify a B2 level for Dutch.


French

  • - Students with a Flemish secondary school diploma are exempt from demonstrating B2 level for French.
  • - Students with a Flemish academic bachelor/master who do not have a Flemish secondary school diploma do need to certify a B2 level.

Certification can take the form of a broadly recognised standardised test (e.g. the Diplôme approfondi de langue française, TCF, TEF, DELF), a higher education diploma of a programme (majoring) in French, ...


German, Spanish
Students with a Flemish secondary school diploma and/or a Flemish academic bachelor/master should demonstrate a B2 level proficiency in the language of their choice through certification.

Certification can take the form of a broadly recognised standardised test (e.g. the Goethe-Zertifikat, the DELE diplomas), a higher education diploma of a programme (majoring) in German or Spanish, ...

Students who did not obtain their previous degree(s) at an institution of the Flemish Community should submit an application via the Admissions Office: https://www.kuleuven.be/english/application/.

Diploma requirements

The programme is open to students holding one of a broad range of academic Bachelor’s degrees in the fields of languages, communication, economics and business. Depending on your degree, you can enjoy direct access, or will need to take a bridging or preparatory programme.

Assessment of eligibility will be based on the extent to which the undergraduate degree provides a solid background to enable the student to start the programme with a reasonable chance of success.

Language requirements

A B2 level is required for English and the other language that is part of the student's programme.

English

Applicants must prove their English language proficiency through either of these standardised tests:
  • - IELTS Academic, with a minimum score of 6.5. The minimum sub-score is 6.0. 
  • - TOEFL iBT, with a minimum score of 94. The minimum sub-score is 20 out of 30. 
  • - CPE Certificate or CAE Certificate, with a minimum overall score of 173.
  • - Interuniversity Test of Academic English (ITACE), with a C1 or C2 result. 

An exemption from the proof of English proficiency by means of the above-mentioned tests can be given to applicants with a secondary education diploma or a higher education degree earned in Australia, English-speaking Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the USA. In these cases, the degree and transcripts suffice, provided that they show that the entire study was completed in English. Students who completed their studies in a satellite campus located in another country than the main campus of the university are not eligible for this exemption.
