Students with a degree not obtained at an institution of the Flemish Community

Students who did not obtain their previous degree(s) at an institution of the Flemish Community should submit an application via KU Leuven or Ghent University depending on their choice of major. If you wish to specialize in Geosciences, an application via the Admissions Office of KU Leuven should be submitted. If you wish to specialize in Basins and Orogens or in Groundwater and Mineral Resources, submit an application at Ghent University.

Diploma requirements

Bachelor of Geology obtained outside the Flemish community or other degrees will be admitted on individual basis.

Language requirements

All applicants must prove their proficiency in English. The accepted English proficiency tests are:
  • TOEFL iBT: minimum overall score of 90. Please use university code 0749 for KU Leuven and 2643 for UGent.
  • IELTS Academic test: minimum overall score of 7.0
  • A certificate awarded by the Ghent University Language Centre confirming proficiency in English, CEFR-level B2.
  • Certificate Practical English 5, Upper-Intermediate Academic English or Preparing for an English test, issued by the Ghent University Language Centre.
  • Cambridge-ESOL: First certificate in English (FCE)


The following applicants are exempted from submitting an English proficiency certificate:
  • Applicants who have obtained a diploma of secondary or higher education in the Flemish community;
  • Applicants whose official transcript of records demonstrate that they have passed the examinations of at least one year of study in secondary or higher education in English (i.e. the student needs to have obtained 60 credits).

Additional requirements

We ask you to submit the following extra documents with your application:

1. English version of course description: We ask an English version (or translation) of the course description for the courses that you deem most relevant as a preparation for the master. For each relevant course, you should provide a brief description of the course objectives, the main topics treated, the workload per course unit and the course materials used. If your university provides these description online or via a syllabus, you can copy-paste these descriptions. Applicants who have obtained a degree from a university listed in the global top 200 in the most recent edition of THE or QS World University Rankings are exempted from submitting the course description.

2. Grading system: If the description of the grading system of your home university is not included in the PDF scan of your transcripts of academic records, please provide the grading table, or a document explaining the grading system of your home university. Applicants who have obtained a degree from a university listed in the global top 200 in the most recent edition of THE or QS World University Rankings are exempted from submitting the grading description.

3. Selftest: We require applicants to perform and submit this admission test, which tests the mapping and microscopy skills that are indispensable for a successful completion of the master program at the KU Leuven.
