Objectives
Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates will have the following learning outcomes:1. Competent in one or more scientific disciplines
The graduate:
- has advanced knowledge and insights in structural mechanics, building materials, building technology, geotechnics, and either structural engineering or hydraulic engineering.
- is able to identify the structure and coherence of the specific disciplines; is able to integrate and apply knowledge and skills acquired in the above-mentioned disciplines in a complex real-life context.
2. Competence in research
The graduate:
- can translate a complex civil engineering problem into specific research objectives, can develop a research plan, can explain the different steps of the research process to acquire new knowledge: critical analysis, formulation of the problem definition, action plan, implementation plan and synthesis.
- can implement the research plan and implement, analyse and critically evaluate the research results.
3. Skilled in design
The graduate:
- can analyse complex challenges of the built environment and reformulate them into specific problems, can integrate existing information, can explore viable alternatives and can make reasoned choices during the creative design process.
- contributes with his own professional knowledge and skills to multidisciplinary design groups, with the aim of optimising the design, in collaboration with other specialists such as architects, geologists, archaeologists...
4. Scientific approach
The graduate:
- takes a critical approach and takes into account current debates and new developments and theories in the field of structural engineering or hydraulic engineering.
- can evaluate and select advanced conceptual and/or mathematical models, including the appropriate material model, appropriate boundary conditions and simplifications justified for a specific application.
- can independently gather and synthesise existing knowledge using different sources such as databases, scientific literature, internet...
5. Intellectual basic skills
The graduate:
- has a critical attitude towards application methods and results in daily civil engineering practice. He/she is able to evaluate the order of magnitude of input parameters and the resulting output. He/she is able to assess assumptions underlying the mathematical approach.
6. Ability to collaborate and communicate
The graduate:
- can report on research and project results in writing and orally to experts, fellow students, lay people, in English.
- can collaborate on projects in a (multi-disciple) group, can manage projects, demonstrates responsibility and time management and document project progress and results.
- can work independently.
7. Taking into account the social and societal context
The graduate:
- is aware of and takes into account the impact of buildings and civil engineering structures on the environment and society, the built environment as cultural heritage, the importance of construction industry for the local economy, legal regulations, etc.
- is able, in line with current debate, to perceive the long-term impact of construction interventions at the level of a single structure, its environment, as well as the regional or national scale, taking into account sustainability, visual impact, resilience, climate change, ethics, etc.
The graduate:
· Lets his or her scientific and technical knowledge guide him or herself in the engineering profession.
· Has an engineering attitude that enables him or her to formulate solutions to complex problems, taking into account relevant constraints of economic, legal, social, ... nature.
· Is aware of his or her social and ethical responsibility and can act accordingly.
· Has a willingness for open communication and cooperation, both with engineers within and outside the discipline, as well as with other actors in the field.
· Has insight into the broader role civil engineers play in society.
· Shows willingness to keep abreast of new scientific and technical developments, with a sufficiently critical approach.
