Content
After a critical discussion on the different visions of mathematics education, there is an exemplary treatment for the mathematics component of recent research and development work on a number of subjects from the mathematics programme from primary schools, such as: elementary basic skills; mental arithmetic, estimation and calculations; word problems; ratio and proportion, graphical literacy, and rational numbers. In the language component, after an introductory chapter on developments in the vision on and the approach to language didactics in general, the following topics are addressed: literacy, reading and spelling; reading comprehension and text composition; children’s literature; linguistics. Each of the subparts will be dealt with attainment targets, current instructional practices, and recent research and development work in this domain.

The syllabus includes a reader that contains articles, chapters, etc from both theoretical as well as practice-aimed publications. The content of this reader changes every year.
Format: more information
During the lectures, the following teaching and learning activities take place:
- Clarify: situate texts, explain obscurities, determine own position;
- Illustrate: mathematical methods, tests, lesson observations, interviews, software;
- Apply: reflection on own mathematical work, assess of learning means, make an error diagnosis;
- Prepare: by means of illustrative exam questions.
Evaluation
Evaluation: Mathematics and Language Education (B-KUL-P2L36a)
Explanation
The exam is on 20 points. The knowledge of and the insight into the offered information is evaluated, as well as the ability to apply it when interpreting and evaluating the didactic practice. The exam is a written open book exam consisting of open questions, short-answer questions and multiple choice questions (with correction for guessing) about the lessons. For the open book exam the students are allowed to use all course materials on paper, they are not allowed to use digitalized material.
