Pharmaceutical medicine can be defined as the discipline that is concerned with the medical aspects of discovery, research, development, evaluation, registration, monitoring, and marketing of medicines (pharmaceuticals, biologicals) in the interests of patients.

Pharmaceutical Medicine is a young scientific field involving a wide range of disciplines and people with different educational backgrounds.

At the end of this course the student will have insight into the following topics:

  • Discovery and development of new medicines (from molecule to medicine)
  • Clinical drug development: different phases of drug development (pre-clinical and clinical)
  • Types of clinical and scientific studies with regards to drugs
  • Regulatory issues regarding the development of new drugs: (inter)national guidelines and laws regarding clinical trials as well as registration and marketing of new drugs
  • Drugs and society: specific issues regarding regulations of drugs, drug distribution, drug information, drug treatment and financing of drug treatment in Belgium
  • Capita selecta: pharmacology in high risk groups, biologicals and vaccines

Basic concepts of physiology, biostatistics, toxicology and pharmacology.
