The aim is to provide basic knowledge of applied statistics for human sciences, with an attitude of attention for statistical significance and a skill with statistical software. The insight is developed with applications in various fields, among others linguistics, communication, history, archeology, education research.

 

A good calculating skill of the secondary school level and a basic knowledge of computer use  are presupposed.

Statistical concepts and methods are being explained on the basis of real datasets with the use of the statistical software R/RStudio.

  • Population and sample.
  • Descriptive statistics.
  • Statistical models: probability theory, normal distribution, binomial distribution.
  • Explanatory statistics. Estimates and standard error. Confidence intervals for mean and proportion. Required sample size.
  • Statistical hypothesis testing: basic concepts, p-value.
  • Tests for means and proportions for one group and two groups: z-test, t-tests, F-test, binomial test.
  • Non-parametric tests: median, Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney.
  • Tests for cell distributions: chi-squared test for goodness of fit, independence and homogeneity; Fisher's exact test.
  • Linear regression, correlation, time series.
  • Comparison of multiple groups: analysis of variance (optional).
  • Principal component analysis (optional).

 

  • Course text and exercises are made available on Toledo.
  • The software being used (R/RStudio) is freely available from the web and runs on all major computer platforms.
