POC Nanowetenschappen en nanotechnologie

The aim of this course is to offer the students a number of lessons (12-13 lessons/seminars each year) that deal with certain important and current developments in nanotechnology, from a scientific as well as societal point of view in which the main focus will be on interdisciplinary and broadening aspects. The content of the program changes every year. The seminars are given by experts from Belgium or abroad and coming from the academic or industrial world.

How does so-called Nanoscience and Nanotechnology impact on modern society?   What are important scientific and technological nanotech fields at present?  What novel properties are created by precise manipulation of materials at atomic scale?  Can we construct novel building blocks with nano-scale precision and for what purpose ?   What is the link between nanotech and lifescience?   What are there ethical or legal aspects we should know and care about?   What business opportunities arisein e.g. life-science, biotech, ICT or consumer products?

All lectures are broadcast live by the Audio-Visual department of the K.U. Leuven (AVNet) to all Erasmus Mundus partner universities using a Virtual Classroom concept. The video recording of the classes can be reviewed on-line after the lecture.  The lectures are open to everyone interested in the field and compulsory for the students in both Master programs . All lectures are always followed by a discussion session involving the lecturers, the students and nanotechnology professionals.

The course Capita Selecta Lectures NS&NT is compulsory for all students in the Master of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (NS&NT) or in the Erasmus Mundus Master of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. The course is spread over the 2 Master years (2 academic years). Each year, about 12 lectures are scheduled in the 2nd semester of the academic year (weekly on Tuesday at 5pm, from early February until end of May). The students in both programs are expected to attend the lectures, organized during their 2 Master years. The interaction with the experts is an essential element of the lectures.  The lectures are life broadcasted to the Erasmus Mundus partner universities.  All lectures are recorded and made available via Toledo for review.

The students receive a copy of the used slides before the start of the lecture. Moreover, all lectures are recorded (video and audio). These recorded lectures are made available within 1 week after the lecture in the Nanotechnology domain to all students and lecturers. The students can therefore consult this material at a later moment at their own pace. The domain contains all lectures of the past years and therefore offers a very broad spectrum of topics.

The student has to attend at least 75% of all lectures organized in 2 consecutive years. This amounts to about 20 lectures. Moreover the student will have to collect the information via library or Internet, needed in the preparation of his reports.

Evaluation

Evaluation: Lectures on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (B-KUL-H26N2a)

Type : Partial or continuous assessment with (final) exam during the examination period
Description of evaluation : Written
Type of questions : Open questions, Multiple choice
Learning material : None

A written evaluation will be organized at the end of each series of lectures. There will be a first partial evaluation at the end of phase 1 based on a written report on one of the lectures. There will be a final exam at the end of the second phase during the normal exam period. It will consist of two to three questions for each lecture. The students will not be allowed to use notes nor other content to complete the exam. The total score over the two exams will determine whether the student has passed.
