POC Conservation of Monuments and Sites

The students acquire skills in building archaeology, specifically in 'reading' historic structures and materials such as masonry, stonework, brickwork and roof structures, and learn to interpret their observations with a view to establishing the chronology of a historic building and its successive phases of change.

Knowledge of architectural history.

Team work - interactive - continuous guidance and assessment.
Detailed survey of an architectural element, with introduction to manual recording techniques and building archaeology.

Detailed survey of an architectural element of a historic building, with introduction to manual recording techniques and building archaeology. By sketching, measuring and drawing an element in detail (of a wall, roof structure, staircase, window etc), students learn to observe attentively a part of a building to get a full understanding of its construction and building history. Team work in pairs.
