Seminar and Internship Athletics: Part 1 (B-KUL-L01I3B)
Aims
After completing this course, the student is able to:
- professionally advise and assist competitors in athletics (youth to elite)
- independently translate acquired competencies into appropriate (individualized) training programs for elite youth athletes in order to prepare for major competitions
- to coach competitors (youth to elite) during competitions
- to act as a talent scout in a Federation / club
This course contributes to:
- develop knowledge regarding the professional reality of athletics and elite sports in Flanders (by means of guest lectures, independent studying, observations …)
- develop an efficient communication with the different key players within the training process: representatives of the federation and the clubs, coaches, athletes, parents…

Previous knowledge:
Highly recommended to have taken the courses Training and Coaching Athletics (e.g. L00F7a and L09c8a) and Internship Athletics (e.g. L04D0B).
The student is already familiar with the basics of the teaching of athletics and the related coaching in (young) athletes on a recreational level or at a more competitive level. The student must have been actively involved in the coaching of (young) athletes and in the organization of training sessions.

Prerequisites for students who are not registrered for the program bachelor of Physical Education and Movement Sciences/Master of Movement and Sports Sciences, but wish to include the course as a component of choice in their program:

Content
In the seminars, we focus on topics that are closely related to the practice and training in competitive athletes. Specific attention is paid to the development of conditional, technical and psychological aspects in talented youth.
The following topics are covered:
- talent detection and development
- Training preparation ( periodization)
- video analysis of athletic performances
- measuring and evaluating the athlete’s performance in order to elaborate the training process
- injury prevention in athletics

Some of the subjects are taught by the lecturer. During the second semester, students elaborate a theme, first theoretically in the seminar, afterwards in a practice session.
6 ects. Internship Athletics: Part 1 (B-KUL-L01I5a)
Content
By means of the internship, students are familiarized with the various aspects of sports performance coaching of athletes, both at the level of the club and the federation. During the internship, the student will be actively involved in the guidance and coaching of performance athletes and elite youth in the organization of trainings, internships and competitions at competition level. Thus the student can be fully proficient in the practice of training and coaching of performance athletes of all ages and skill levels.
The internship consists of internal and external independent internship with the guidance of an internal and external supervisor and is spread over the entire academic year.
Internal self-placement:
- to assist athletics education to students of the 1st and/or 2nd phase of the bachelor programme
External independent training:
- Club internship, Federal trainings (organized by the sports federations with elite sports jurisdiction)
- Internship with a club team or youth elite athletes
- training days, workshops, clinics

The tasks of the student regarding the internship consists of the following aspects:
1. making or following the planning and periodization (club, federation)
2. to prepare trainings, according to the periodization and the specific objectives proposed by the supervisor
3. to execute scoutings (strength / weakness analysis) of a competitor (physical, technical) and to translate the results to elaborate training preparations
4. to know the position of the trainer, youth coordinator, sports coordinator within the club or federal structure.
5. to describe the club structure (internally and within the federation), to describe of the federal (elite sport) structure.
6. Assistance by activities during internship (preparation, evaluation, ...)
7. to coordinate the training activities (during a full academic year)
8. to make a portfolio of all trainings and related activities, initiatives and side information (log), including personal reflection
