Seminar and Internship Athletics: Part 2 (B-KUL-L01I6A)
Aims
After completing this course, the student is able to:
- professionally advise and assist competitors in athletics (youth an adults)
- independently translate acquired competencies into appropriate (individualized) training programs for elite athletes in order to prepare for major competitions
- to coach competitors during competitions
- to act as a talent scout in a Federation / club
This course contributes to:
- develop knowledge regarding the professional reality of athletics and elite sports in Flanders (by means of guest lectures, independent studying, observations …)
- develop an efficient communication with the different key players within the training process: representatives of the federation and the clubs, coaches, athletes, parents…

It is highly recommended to have taken courses on seminar and internship athletics part 1, and to have the qualification of VTS Trainer B.
The student is already familiar with various aspects of coaching (young) athletes, on both a recreational and a club level. The student must have been actively involved in the supervision of (young) athletes in sports and in the organization of training courses, (mini-) courses and youth competition games.
Prerequisites credit contract:
Students are in possession of one of the following degrees:
- Bachelor in de lichamelijke opvoeding en bewegingswetenschappen
To follow this course the student is required to have followed all courses from the truncus and the major of his/her main subject, with the exception of MP part 1 and MP part 2.
Prerequisites for students who are not registrered for the program bachelor of Physical Education and Movement Sciences/Master of Movement and Sports Sciences, but wish to include the course as a component of choice in their program:
These students should contact the coordinator of the course. On the basis of prior knowledge and motivation, the coordinator will determine whether or not the student can be admitted to the course.

Content
During the athletics seminar certain themes which are specific for athletics will be discussed. The objective is to keep close to the training reality. Attention is paid to the supervision of elite (youth and adults) on a conditional, technical and mental level.
The following topics will be deepened further:
- Language development
- Preparation of trainings with a view to periodisation and specific objectives
- Video-analysis of athletics performances
- Measuring and assessing the performance capacity of athletes with a view to training supervision
- Scientific guidance within athletics
- Injury prevention within the scope of athletics.

4 ects. Internship Athletics: Part 2 (B-KUL-L01I8a)
Content
By means of the internship, students are familiarized with the various aspects of sports performance coaching of athletes, both at the level of the club and the federation. During the internship, the student will be actively involved in the guidance and coaching of performance athletes and elite youth in the organization of trainings, internships and competitions at competition level. Thus the student can be fully proficient in the practice of training and coaching of performance athletes of all ages and skill levels.
The internship consists of internal and external independent internship with the guidance of an internal and external supervisor and is spread over the entire academic year.
Internal self-placement:
- to assist athletics education to students of the 1st and/or 2nd phase of the bachelor programme
External independent training:
- Club internship, Federal trainings (organized by the sports federations with elite sports jurisdiction)
- Internship with a club team or youth elite athletes
- training days, workshops, clinics

The tasks of the student regarding the internship consists of the following aspects:
1. making or following the planning and periodization (club, federation)
2. to prepare trainings, according to the periodization and the specific objectives proposed by the supervisor
3. to execute scoutings (strength / weakness analysis) of a competitor (physical, technical) and to translate the results to elaborate training preparations
4. to know the position of the trainer, youth coordinator, sports coordinator within the club or federal structure.
5. to describe the club structure (internally and within the federation), to describe of the federal (elite sport) structure.
6. Assistance by activities during internship (preparation, evaluation, ...)
7. to coordinate the training activities (during a full academic year)
8. to make a portfolio of all trainings and related activities, initiatives and side information (log), including personal reflection
