Chinese Philosophy (B-KUL-F0UC2A)
Aims
To introduce and reflect upon early Chinese texts through textual passages from primary sources in translation. The focus lies (1) on the interaction of the texts with contemporary issues and (2) on the possibility of different translations or interpretations. In the lecture notes, original textual passages are usually given only one translation; other options will be discussed in class. The lecture notes are in English, but the bibliographies include sources in other languages, including Dutch. Classes alternate between English (even years) and Dutch (uneven years).

The main focus lies on the first eruption of different ideas in the ancient period (c. 5th – 3rd centuries BCE.) recorded in sources associated with or named after Confucius, Mozi, Mencius, Laozi, Zhuangzi, Xunzi, and Hanfeizi.
