Frontiers of Science (B-KUL-E02N8A)
Aims
Upon completion of this course unit, the student will be able to:
- prepare a summary of a scientific lecture in the field of biomedical sciences, with reference to the original literature.
- make the connection between the attended lecture and their own research (master's thesis) or future research ambitions.
- assess the broader context of biomedical scientific research (international dimension, social importance, valorization).
- reflect, on the basis of the attended lecture, on (own) career perspectives in biomedical sciences.
Previous knowledge
The student is able to follow a scientific lecture in English in the field of biomedical sciences. He/she has a thorough knowledge of the various basic biomedical disciplines. The student is familiar with the various forms of scientific communication.
Is included in these courses of study
- Master of Biomedical Sciences (Leuven) 120 ects.
Activities
3 ects. Frontiers of Science (B-KUL-E02N8a)
Content
You attend at least six lectures by guest speakers with international reputation who do not belong to KU Leuven. Thematically these lectures fall within the broad field of biomedical sciences. You can draw from the scientific lectures that take place in Leuven during the academic year, from online webinars or from lectures you attend during a scientific congress. Afterwards, you elaborate on these lectures in a structured reflection on the content of the lecture and what this means for you.
Course material
The study material for this course consists of the lecture itself and supplemented, if necessary, with research articles on the topic of the attended lecture.
Format: more information
Discussion - Portfolio - Webinar
At the start of the academic year there is an introduction session in which the objectives and the practical implementation of the course unit are explained.
During the academic year you attend the lectures or online webinars. Afterwards, you write a short structured report in which you reflect on the content of the lecture, the form of presentation and the implications for your research. These reports are compiled in a portfolio according to a standardized template.
In the second semester, there is a feedback session in which the portfolio is discussed.
Evaluation
Evaluation: Frontiers of Science (B-KUL-E22N8a)
Explanation
The grading scale of this course unit is pass/fail.
This course unit is assessed with a pass/fail based on
- the portfolio that is handed in the course of the second semester. For this portfolio you use the template that is made available through Toledo. To obtain a pass for this OPO, the portfolio needs to be complete (at least six lectures) and handed in on time (guidelines will be communicated through Toledo).
- attendance and participation in the response lecture. As an exception (e.g. stay abroad) participation in the response lecture can be replaced by an alternative reflection assignment.
Information about retaking exams
If students did not attend the feedback session, they have to make an alternative reflection assignment.
