Learning goals
In completing this course, students will have an overview of the main phases of the history of international law with regard to one of its core subjects, use of force law, and have gained the ability to assess current developments from a broader, historical perspective.

Content
The object of this class is the historical growth of modern international law in and outside Europe. Except for a general overview, the core theme this year is the development of use of force law in theory and practice.
Course material
• Stephen Neff, War and the Law of Nations. A General History, Cambridge University Press, 2005.
• Scholarly articles and source materials with commentaries to be downloaded (listed on Toledo).

During the weekly lectures, the main questions are covered, in part through the analysis of key historical sources. Students are asked to prepare for class by reading the literature, so they can better participate in the class discussions.

Explanation
The exam consists of four open questions, students have to respond through a brief (1-2 page) essay. The use of the prescribed literature (not annotated) is permitted.
