The approach is not that of internal canon law, but rather the reverse perspective, namely the attitude of the law towards matters that are part of religious territory. This implies the need for a thorough analysis of freedom of religion. What exactly does it entail? Are there any regional differences in focus, and are they admissible?
Naturally, there is a focus on various present-day burning issues, including the legal status of Islam, the new religious movements, security, interreligious dialogue, Europe and financing of religion. Concrete problems allow reflection on future legal structures concerning the relation between law and religion.

The teaching material consists of a syllabus and powerpoint presentations to support the syllabus. In addition, case studies and legislation are also part of the content. Only the legislation and case studies may be used during the exam.
