What will we study?

•The basics of Latin syntax (how sentences are formed in Latin).

•The basics of Latin morphology (how words are formed in Latin) of adjectives and nouns.

•The basics of Latin morphology of pronouns

•The verbal system (and this is tremendously difficult)

•Elementary vocabulary (there will be a vocabulary list on Toledo).

This course consists of online lectures. 

Evaluation

Evaluation: Introduction to Christian Latin (B-KUL-B2B69b)

Type : Partial or continuous assessment with (final) exam during the examination period
Description of evaluation : Oral, Written, Participation during contact hours

The overall final grade is determined on the basis of two exams:

Written exam in January: 15% Oral exam in June: 85%


January exam: 15% - Written
The whole vocabulary list and all the syntax and morphology (paradigms of nouns, adjectives, and pronouns) we will be able to see in the first semester.
Types of questions:

  • You will get Latin words and will have to provide the English or Dutch translation.
  • You will get simple exercises on the morphology.
  • You might get simple questions on syntax.

Duration: max 2h

June exams: 85% - Oral
20 minutes oral exam after a 1h preparation time.

Type of questions:

  • Unseen Latin text
    • You will be asked to translate parts of the text
    • You will have to identify mistakes in the translation that is already provided
    • You will have to decipher another part of the text with the help of a translation that is provided..
    • Most importantly: To analyse this text grammatically

For the June exam the vocabulary list can be used or a dictionary.

Both exams can only be retaken in the August examination period. Two separate dates will be provided for both re-examinations.
