Clinical Psychology of Religion (B-KUL-A0AD4A)
Aims
After completing this OPO students:
KNOWLEDGE
- have an advanced understanding of how religion is approached within (clinical) psychology
- have insight in how the field of clinical psychology of religion evolved during the last decades
- understand the concept of ‘meaning system’ and can illustrate how individuals' meaning system can affect and be affected by stressful life events
- are able to discuss how religion and spirituality can affect the mental functioning of individuals in both pathological and non-pathological manners
- who will be teachers of religion must have the expertise to recognize in class problematic forms of religion, to understand these, and be able to clinically refer pupils when necessary
SKILLS
- are able to critically evaluate and analyse the contents and the methods applied in scientific publications on these topics
- are able to write a critical reflection paper on a topic within the field of the clinical psychology of religion which includes: formulation of a central argument after analysing relevant scientific materials, providing sufficient evidence-based support for the central argument, developing a clear line of reasoning for the reader.
ATTITUDES
- are able to reflect on their own stance as researcher with regard to psychological study of religion

Basic knowledge on psychology is required (introduction to the psychology of religion or similar courses).

Format: more information
The course is highly dynamic and interactive. Students are expected to attend and prepare classes. Weekly small assignments are given and used as starting point of class discussions and exchange moments. The course consists of lectures providing in-depth knowledge, debates on specific topics (e.g., stance as a researcher to study religion; religious experiences versus psychopathology, etc.), discussion of new research findings.
