Aims
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- summarize the history of eastern Christianity and its connections to other traditions;
- describe major theological traits and practices of eastern Christianity;
- discuss the heritage of eastern Christianity within the contemporary religious landscape in Europe and throughout the world;
- evaluate historical narratives of eastern Christianity and their influence both on contemporary society and on ecumenical and interreligious relations today;
- and devise and discuss the implications of a history of Christianity that includes eastern Christian traditions from the beginning and is global in its outlook.

Content
This course offers an orientation to the rich and diverse traditions of eastern Christianity. Course sessions will introduce the history, theology, and practices of these communities from their origins to the present day. The presence of eastern Christian traditions in Europe and throughout the world will be emphasized. Students will encounter eastern Christianity through reading and discussing primary sources and by visiting – in person or digitally – a local eastern Christian church. The intersection of the history and heritage of eastern Christian communities with their western counterparts will form an ongoing focal point of discussion.

Any potential printing costs and optional course material are not included in this price.)
A reader with primary and secondary sources may be purchased for around 10 Euros from Katechetika. The same sources will be made available online at no cost.

Company visit
Students are expected to read primary sources (and sometimes secondary readings) in preparation for each class session. Attendance and active participation in class discussions are an essential part of the overall assessment. Students will be expected to visit a local eastern Christian church – either in person or digitally – as part of the course requirements.

In addition to written work and the final exam, there will be ongoing assesment based on participation in the course (with modifications for work students).
