Students with a degree obtained at an institution of the Flemish Community

For admission to this programme, the general admission requirements for a bachelor programme apply:
1°      a Flemish degree of secondary education; awarded in the school year 2024-2025 or earlier;
1°/1   a Flemish degree of secondary education, educational qualification level 4, awarded as of the school year 2024-2025;
2°      a Flemish degree of short-course higher education;
3°      a Flemish degree of higher education for social advancement, with the exception of the certificate of pedagogic aptitude (Getuigschrift Pedagogische Bekwaamheid), or
4°      a degree or certificate, awarded in the context of the Flemish HBO (hoger beroepsonderwijs)
4°/1   a Flemish bachelor's or master's degree

Participating in a positioning test is mandatory, yet the result is not binding.

Students with a degree not obtained at an institution of the Flemish Community

Students who did not obtain their previous degree(s) at an institution of the Flemish Community should submit an application via the Admissions Office: https://www.kuleuven.be/english/application.

To be eligible for the Bachelor of Engineering Technology, you must have access to higher education in your home country. You also have to provide evidence of your proficiency in mathematics as well as English.
Requested proofs of proficiency are, however, not an immediate guarantee for admission. Your application file including your previous education qualifications will be evaluated as a whole.

All students – including Belgian students – must be formally enrolled (and have fulfilled all conditions) at the start of the academic year. Attendance to the introductory course (starting 3 weeks before the start of the academic year) is mandatory.

Diploma requirements

- Applicants who have obtained a European Baccalaureate diploma or an International Baccalaureate diploma can be admitted provided they meet the English language proficiency requirements and the mathematics requirements described below.

- Applicants who obtained a secondary education degree or university degree awarded by a recognized educational institution from a country that is part of the European Union can be admitted provided they can be admitted in that country to an equivalent programme as the Bachelor of Engineering Technology, ánd provided they meet the English language proficiency requirements and the mathematics requirements described below.

- Applicants who obtained a degree or certificate in a country outside of the European Union, which, pursuant to a law, decree or European guideline or another international agreement, is not deemed equivalent to the certificates mentioned under “Students with a degree obtained in the Flemish Community” can only be admitted to the Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Leuven) on the condition that this document gives admission to a Bachelor's programme in the country where it has been awarded, comparable to a Flemish Bachelor's degree. Applicants need to meet the English language proficiency requirements and the mathematics requirements described below.

- Applicants who have been awarded the General Certificate of Education (GCE) can be eligible for admission if they can prove to have passed at least three A-Level subjects. These A-Level subjects must include mathematics and at least one relevant science course (e.g. biology, physics and chemistry). The third subject is preferably another science course, but can also be unrelated to science if the grades are satisfactory. A minimum grade of ‘B’ is required for each of the three subjects. Applicants with a grade ‘C’ can still be considered eligible after a favourable decision taken by the Admissions Committee of the faculty on the basis of an evaluation of the entire application file and previous education qualifications of the applicant. Applicants also need to meet the English language proficiency requirements and the mathematics requirements described below.

Language requirements

Required proof of English language proficiency (No other tests than below-mentioned are accepted):

- TOEFL: internet based test (iBT) 85 (min. subscores 20)
- IELTS Academic certificate: 6.5 (min. subscores 6)
- Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) or Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE) exam: 176 (min. subscores 169)

Exemption from proof of English language proficiency:

- Applicants having obtained a Flemish diploma of secondary education.
- Applicants having obtained a secondary education degree or a higher education degree in Australia, English-speaking Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom or the USA (the certified degree and transcripts suffice, provided they confirm that the entire study was completed in English).
- Applicants having obtained a European Baccalaureate diploma and providing proof that at least 16 course hours per week of the programme were taught in English (Physical Education not included).
- Applicants having obtained an International Baccalaureate diploma with at least half of the courses of their diploma programme taught in the English language.

Additional requirements

Mathematics Proficiency

Applicants need to reach a minimum score on one of the following tests:

  • - General SAT test with a minimum score of 730 on the mathematics section.
  • - ACT test with a minimum score of 32 on the mathematics section.
  • - the SOWISO OMPT-D test with a minimum score of 60%

Applicants are responsible to timely make an appointment for any of the above tests themselves. Test results are valid for maximum 5 years.

Applicants who have obtained the following diplomas/certificates may be admitted without proof of the minimum required SAT, ACT or OMPT-D score, but in that case are required to participate in the positioning test, which takes place on campus (Leuven) and typically in the beginning of July:

- a European Baccalaureate diploma
- an International Baccalaureate diploma
- a General Certificate of Education (GCE) (cf. supra) in a country that is part of the European Union
- a secondary education degree or university degree awarded by a recognized educational institution from a country that is part of the European Union.

Additional information

If you are not sure you can arrive in Belgium at the beginning of July for the positioning test, it is better to choose early enough for one of the above tests to prove your proficiency in Mathematics. Please note that you can participate in the SAT at the latest in June (please check exact dates) or in ACT at the latest in July (please check exact dates), or in the SOWISO OMPT-D test (available online).

We advise non-EEA applicants with an IB or an EB diploma to choose timely for one of the Mathematics tests mentioned above, since you will need a visa to travel to Belgium for the positioning test at the beginning of July.

If you don’t participate in the positioning test organized in Group T Leuven Campus, Belgium, and you also cannot provide an SAT/ACT/OMPT-D test with sufficient scores, the Faculty has the right to deny admission to the programme.

The result of the positioning test is not binding but participation is mandatory if none of above-mentioned proofs of mathematics proficiency can be provided. Students are advised that a sound basis in mathematics is essential before one starts the programme. Please check here.
