Content
'Literary Theory I' is subdivided into three modules that deal with the theory of narrative fiction, poetry analysis and
drama theory respectively. It is a general course, which means that it does not concentrate on specific types of literature (e.g. French
or Dutch literature; 18th century or contemporary literature) but on literature in general. The selected texts vary from the classics to present-day literary experiments. Moreover, 'Literary Theory I' is both a general and an auxiliary course, for it is not limited to the study of national literatures. The concepts from literary theory will also prove useful in other courses dealing with literature or cultural studies.
The aim of 'Literary Theory I' is twofold. On the one hand, students gain insight into the dynamics of literature on a theoretical level. On the other hand, students learn how to apply the theoretical concepts and methods to the analysis and interpretation of literary texts.
Course material
The study material consists of a textbook published by ACCO, a novella, and literary fragments in a text collection printed by ACCO.
