History of the Middle Ages (B-KUL-F0LA3A)
Aims
At the end of this course the student will be able to explain the fundamental evolution of Western society during the Middle Ages (ca. 300-ca. 1500). The student will be able to describe the various changes, order them chronologically and interpret them. Moreover, the student will be able to identify the major medieval protagonists who contributed to this evolution and explain the most characteristic terms with regards to medieval history. Lastly, the student will gain insight into the main historiographical debates and theories on various medieval topics.

Content
This course offers a historical overview of the ca. thousand years of the Western Middle Ages. It consists of a common part (26 hrs, 4 study points) for all target groups and a complementary part (13 hrs) for those students who have to follow the 6 study points course. The common part consists of an explanation of the different components of the Late Roman Empire as well as those of the Middle Ages. A broad study of the diverse elements of the religious and cultural life is performed through political events, evolving institutions and socio-economic states. The complementary part consists of a further study of some capita selecta.
An introduction to the conceptualization of the Middle Ages in the past and at present is followed by a chronological panorama, starting in Late Antiquity, which discusses the extent to which there was continuity between that period and the Early Middle Ages. This is followed by the study of the Early (ca. 500-ca. 1000), High (ca. 1000-ca. 1200) and Late Middle Ages (ca. 1200-ca. 1500). For each of these periods, attention is paid to the political events, the socio-economic developments, and religion and culture.
