For 'Art History from 1860’ students can:

  • describe and explain the different art branches and their materiality;
  • explain the sequence and simultaneity of art movements;
  • recognise and name a number of important works (and any names of craftsmen/artists);
  • analyse important works and indicate their characteristics;
  • analyse and explain the differences between important works (and stylistic movements);
  • situate important works in their cultural-historical context.

  • general interest in the visual arts of the indicated period
  • students have the necessary visual and historical interest and are willing to refine it
  • passive knowledge of English and French

The course gives an overview of the visual arts with a focus on the Western tradition.

Students are expected to actively attend classes and take notes.

Written exam consisting of an essay question, two concept questions and an image question:

  • question 1 (10/20) is an extensive essay question (e.g. evolution question on the basis of a theme or a certain angle of approach)
  • questions 2 and 3 (5/20) probe for (contextual) knowledge about the oeuvre of an artist, a term, a technique or a principle.
  • question 4 (5/20) is an image analysis question (a comparison of two images)

The modalities are identical in the third examination session.
