Aims
For 'Art History from 1860’ students can:
- describe and explain the different art branches and their materiality;
- explain the sequence and simultaneity of art movements;
- recognise and name a number of important works (and any names of craftsmen/artists);
- analyse important works and indicate their characteristics;
- analyse and explain the differences between important works (and stylistic movements);
- situate important works in their cultural-historical context.
For 'Art History from 1860: close study' students can:
- apply and deepen their stylistic and chronological knowledge and insight to a particular art-historical theme;
- highlight the material-technical aspects (only if the topic allows it);
- use visual, cultural-historical, anthropological and literary sources to interpret the theme;
- explain the philosophical, ethical and social functions of the theme.
Previous knowledge
- general interest in the visual arts of the indicated period
- students have the necessary visual and historical interest and are willing to refine it
- passive knowledge of English and French

Content
The content of this part of the course may vary per series of lectures and will depend on current developments in research. The focus can be thematic and explore a certain topic throughout the development of art or can be centered around a certain period or art branch. If possible, the focus will be linked to current art events (exhibitions, congresses, ...).

Evaluation

Explanation
Written exam consisting of an essay question, two concept questions and an image question:
- question 1 (10/20) is an extensive essay question concerning the totality of the course materials (e.g. evolution question on the basis of a theme or a certain angle of approach)
- question 2 (5/20) questions an aspect addressed in the 2 ECTS part of the course
- question 3 (5/20) is an image analysis question concerning the totality of the course materials (a comparison of two images)
