POC Geneeskunde

The main objective is the active acquisition of a thorough three-dimensional knowledge of the musculoskeletal anatomy of the torso, neck and limbs.
Additional objectives are:
• acquiring insight into (sometimes important) variations on normal anatomy;
• development of manual skills and the 'feel' of tissues;
• acquiring a scientific and critical attitude by confronting previously acquired theoretical knowledge with the practical reality;
• stimulation of team work and peer-learning;
• acquiring systematic approach and accuracy.

You have prior knowledge of the systematic anatomy of the locomotor system (limbs and torso), of the peripheral nervous system and the vascular system. It is absolutely necessary to prepare the dissections, guided by the dissection notes and the study material from the course 'anatomy and function of the human locomotor system'.

The courses of the Bachelor of Medicine can only be attended if the entrance exam has been passed, as organised by the Flemish Community. For more info: https://toelatingsexamenartstandarts.be/

Mixed prerequisite:
You may only take this course if you comply with the prerequisites. Prerequisites can be strict or flexible, or can imply simultaneity. A degree level can be also be a prerequisite.
Explanation:
STRICT: You may only take this course if you have passed or applied tolerance for the courses for which this condition is set.
FLEXIBLE: You may only take this course if you have previously taken the courses for which this condition is set.
SIMULTANEOUS: You may only take this course if you also take the courses for which this condition is set (or have taken them previously).
DEGREE: You may only take this course if you have obtained this degree level.

FLEXIBLE(E02Y6A) OR FLEXIBLE(U01E0A)

The codes of the course units mentioned above correspond to the following course descriptions:

Activities

3 ects. Anatomical Skills - Dissection (B-KUL-E05Y9a)

3 ECTSDutchFormat: Practical24 First term
POC Geneeskunde

In this course, the following anatomical regions are studied:
- chest region, thorax wall
- axillary region and brachial plexus
- lower limb
- hand
- ventral abdominal wall
- back and neck
- gluteal region
- lower limb
- foot
During the dissection, the student will actively dissect and will have to report to the teacher and other students what has been found, the origin and insertion of the structure, and its function.

The study material consists of human cadavers, donated by testament to the department of anatomy of the KU Leuven. Dissection notes (a written manual) will be available to the students via Acco. Through the accompanying access to Sofia students will have access to dissection photos and additional practice material as preparation for the assessment. The use of an anatomical atlas and Gray's Anatomy for students is essential. Preparation by studying the Acland dissection video is useful and is made available online through the biomedical library (http://bib.kuleuven.be/2bergen/mgas/collecties/db_thematisch). A collection of handbooks and plastinates is available for additional study in the study room.

The students are divided in small or medium sized groups, depending on the total number of students. Each group of students will dissect a cadaver, guided by a teacher and several coworkers. At the start of each session, the dissection program will be discussed, in order to have a correct idea of what specifically  is expected. Frequent demonstrations of dissection techniques are given, but the aim is that you actively dissect as much as possible. Difficult regions such as the suboccipital or inguinal region will be prosected. At the end of the dissection day, you will have to explain the found structures to your fellow students.

Evaluation

Evaluation: Anatomical Skills (B-KUL-E25Y9a)

Type : Continuous assessment without exam during the examination period
Description of evaluation : Presentation, Participation during contact hours, Process evaluation
Type of questions : Open questions
Learning material : None

The grading scale of this course unit is pass/fail.

The student gives an oral presentation on the region they dissected. Additional questions can be asked by the teacher concerning the dissected structures, and concerning regions dissected by other students. The assessment will take into account the clarity and structure of the presentation, the accuracy and extent of dissection performed, and the anatomical knowledge of the student. The assessment is pass/fail.
The assessment takes place during the dissection, and can be performed at any time and possibly repeatedly during the dissection.
Attending the pratical exercises is obligatory. Absence has to be compensated by an additional assignment given by the teacher.

There is no second examination opportunity. Partial attendance during contact hours should be compensated for druing the ongoing academic year in agreement with the coordinator of the course; if students fail the course they must retake the course in the next academic year, as a complete resit of two weeks of dissection is not possible during the third examination period in September.

No 2nd examination opportunity.
