Objective OLA 1: D0R68a Microeconomics (4sp)

On completion of this unit, the student will be able to

  • recognise, define and explain key concepts and theories from microeconomics
  • apply microeconomic theory to real life business problems.

 

Objective OLA 2: D0Q57a Applications of Microeconomics (2sp)

 

The objective of this part of the course is to develop the student's practical skills in applying theoretical knowledge to concrete microeconomic decision-making. For this purpose, the student has to interpret/edit/analyse cases and data using theoretical knowledge acquired in the course.

On the basis of the theoretical knowledge taught in D0R68a Microeconomics, students apply this knowledge to microeconomic decision-making, using concrete cases for which students collect, process and analyse data.

Learning materials available via Toledo.

On the basis of a given set of questions for selected case studies and/or concrete microeconomic problems,  the student prepares one or more papers and adds a report on the way in which he/she has used microeconomic theory in writing the papers.

The course aims to teach students the basics of micro-economics and apply them to firms making decisions in various market environments. Apart from the two extreme market forms, perfect competition and monopoly, different oligopolistic market environments are studied, as well as the impact of government intervention on the functioning of the market.

Two hour lectures are given each week, followed by a one hour seminar. During the lectures, the theory is seen, and during the following seminar, the “learning-by-doing” assignments and the chapter closing assignments from the book.

Evaluation characteristics:

 

Teaching activity 1: D0R68a Microeconomics:

  • Written, closed book exam.
  • The exam consists of multiple choice questions (guess correction).
  • Guess correction is used in grading the exam.
  • Students may use a NON-graphical calculator.
  • During the semester, some sample exam questions will be made available via Toledo.
  • A formulary is added to the exam, in which some rules concerning derivatives and integrals are explained. An example is posted on Toledo.

 

Teaching activity 2: D0q57a Applications of Microeconomics:

 

  • Using a given set of questions for selected case studies and/or concrete microeconomics issues, the student prepares one or more papers and attaches to them an explanation of how he has used microeconomic theory in his answers. 
  • The teacher evaluates the quality of the papers and reports.

 

 

Determining the final result:

 

  • The course unit is assessed by the lecturer(s), as communicated via Toledo and the examination regulations. The result is calculated and expressed with a whole number to 20.
  • The result on 'OLA 2 D0Q57a Applications of microeconomics' is included with a weighting factor of 1/3 in the determination of the total end result on the OPO 'Microeconomics and Applications' only if the student has passed OLA 1: D0R68a Microeconomics. Otherwise, the weighting factor is 0.
  • In the determination of the result on OLA 1: D0R68a Microeconomics, guess correction is used for the multiple choice questions.
