After completing this course, the student has
- developed competence in general and exercise physiology principles
- developed competence in clinical pulmonary and cardiac anamnesis and research
- developed competence in physiotherapeutic treatment techniques for the clearance of mucus transport
- developed insight and competence in respiratory and cardiac rehabilitation and techniques of reconditioning in lung and heart patients
- developed insight and competence in interpretation of pulmonary function
- developed insight and competence in airway secretion clearance
- developed knowledge and skills in the evaluation, rehabilitation and physiotherapy in paediatric congenital heart patients (cyanogenic and acyanogenic problems in tetralogy of Fallot, transposition of large arteries, septum defects, coartatio aorta, aortastenosis...)
- developed knowledge and skills in the evaluation, rehabilitation and physiotherapy in
    - children with obesity and/or diabetes
    - paediatric respiratory disorders, points of interest in baby and child
    - knowledge of pathophysiology of the lung in baby and child, development of the lung and the mucus transport
- knowledge of respiratory physiology and pathofysiology in children and adolescents with respiratory, cardiac or metabolic disorders

Prerequisites for students who are not enrolled in the Bachelor/Master programme of rehabilitation sciences and physiotherapy, but who wish to include the course as an optional course in the diploma contract of their programme: These students must contact the course coordinator. On the basis of the student's previous knowledge and motivation, the coordinator will decide whether or not to admit the student to the course.

The student is well grounded in the anatomy, general physiology, neurophysiology, physiopathology, exercise physiology and science of exercise training and is able to use this knowledge in actual practice.
The student disposes of basic skills in clinical reasoning, patient evaluation, formulating, evaluating and adjusting a treatment plan.
The student carries out his clinical activities critically, empathically and thoroughly.
The student is well grounded in general physiotherapeutic treatment techniques and is able to apply these techniques.

In this course the following topics will be discussed more closely:
1. cardiovascular, metabolic and respiratory evaluation, rehabilitation and physiotherapy in paediatric congenital heart disease (cyanogenic and acyanogenic problems such as tetralogy of Fallot, transposition of large arteries, septum defects, coartatio aorta, aortastenosis...)
2. cardiovascular, metabolic and respiratory evaluation, rehabilitation and physiotherapy in children with obesitas or diabetes
3. cardiovascular, metabolic and respiratory evaluation, rehabilitation and physiotherapy in paediatric respiratory disorders:
- IRDS, points of interest in the newborn and infant
- pathophysiology of the lung in the newborn and infant
- development of the lung and mucus transport.
- respiratory physiology and pathophysiology
      a. mucoviscidosis
      b. bronchiolitis
      c. bronchiectasis
      d. respiratory complications in neuromuscular disorders
- astma and allergy: points of interest for the physiotherapist (incl. aerosol therapy)

Articles and powerpoint presentations will be available on the electronic learning environment

The student is expected to attend and actively participate in the discussions during the classes. In preparation of the lectures, the student reads articles supplied online. The student studies the powerpoint presentations and literature discussed during this course in preparation of his exam.
