The overall aim of this course is to provide students with scientific knowledge on psychopathology in children and adolescents, basic insights into developmental psychopathology, and advanced knowledge of psychopathology in adults and complex cases.
- students will develop knowledge on theoretical insights, frameworks, capacities and attitudes which are necessary for a multidisciplinary diagnostic process and treatment of psychopathology in children and adolescents
- students acquire knowledge on developmental disorders in children and adolescents, and are able to integrate and apply this knowledge
- students are able to analyze cases, to formulate and discuss hypotheses on diagnoses and treatment

- Students acquire advanced knowledge of psychopathology in adults and complex cases, i.e. comorbidities of different psychiatric disorders and comorbidity of psychiatric and somatic disorders

Prerequisites for students who are not enrolled in the Bachelor/Master programme of rehabilitation sciences and physiotherapy, but who wish to include the course as an optional course in the diploma contract of their programme: These students must contact the course coordinator. On the basis of the student's previous knowledge and motivation, the coordinator will decide whether or not to admit the student to the course.

Students have knowledge of typical development in children and adolescents.

Students have basic knowledge of psychopathology in adults.

A general introduction will be given on most important etiological, risk and protective factors which play a role in the development of psychopathology in children and adolescents. Different diagnostic classification systems (categorial: DSM-5; ICD-10; dimensional: ASEBA) will be discussed.
During the course, the following developmental disorders and psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents will be discussed:

  • Disruptive behaviours: ADHD, ODD and CD
  • Specific learning disorders (dyslexia, dyscalculia, NVLD)
  • tic disorders
  • pervasive developmental disorders/ autism spectrum disorder
  • mental handicap/intellectual disability (ID) mild to severe with special focus on: (1) psychopathology in children and adolescents with ID and (2) behavioural phenotypes in genetic disorders: Down syndrome, Fragile X syndrome,    Velo-Cardio-Facial syndrome, Williams syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, Smith-Magenis syndrome ...
  • anxiety disorders in children and adolescents

After completing this course:

  • the student has knowledge concerning the most important developmental milestones, with the focus on social, affective, behavioral and cognitive development.
  • the student is able to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the most important theories of developmental psychology
  • the student has knowledge of the central concepts of human development and their particular effects during different phases of the lifespan
  • the student understands human development as continued adaptation and learning, which comprises growth and gains in skills as well coping with declining capacities
  • the student is able to apply implications and conclusions of the lifespan perspective to their own research activities (e.g., thesis) and later in applied professional contexts

Content

After completing this course:

- the student has advanced knowledge concerning the etiology, (neurobiological) ethiopathogenesis, symptomatology and treatment of:

  • Catatonia (a severe psychomotor syndrome)
  • Melancholia (a disorder of mood and movement)
  • Compulsivity and impulsivity (in disorders such as OCD, personality disorders, Parkinson’s disease, gambling, hoarding and trichotillomania)

- the student acquired knowledge and skills about the treatment plan of patients with this complex psychopathology as well as using appropriate observation scales 

- the student has sufficient knowledge of the effects and side effects of psychotropic medication, in particular drug induced motor changes (such as parkinsonism, tremor, akathisia, dystonia and dyskinesia)
