Aims
At the end of the course, the student is able to:
- situate the importance of occupational safety and health within a company context and within the broader society;
- explain the essential features of a safety management system and outline the responsibilities of the various stakeholders to be involved;
- demonstrate why and how specific management systems and managerial tools will lead to a balanced control of occupational safety issues and the well-being at the workplace in a technical and/or industrial organization,
- deliberately select a management system out of the available international standards within the constraints imposed by the legal and mandatory requirements
- situate the basic notions with respect to well-being at the workplace;
- analyze and investigate occupational accidents
- analyze and optimize an existing safety management system, and improve it by closing any of the gaps found

Content
An overview is presented of the internationally available management systems with respect to occupational safety and related matters, together with their specific characteristics and application fields. The potential for integrating them, and their various tools into other management systems, such as the total quality concept, is discussed. The interrelationship with a Quality and an Environmental management system is outlined
The definitions of occupational accidents and professional illnesses are discussed, as well as the various theories on accident genesis. The methodology of accident investigation is explained, using the fishbone diagram and the event tree scheme.
