At the end of the course, the student is capable of describing the developments in pop music and popular culture since the beginning of the 20th century. The student is able to construct, describe, order chronologically, and contextualize the different developments (in the broader context of pop music; blues, jazz, American songbook, rock, pop, singer-songwriters, hip-hop, dance, political context, technological innovations, gender-aspects, hybridity, etc.). In addition, the student is capable of identifying the central pop artists, who have contributed to these developments, and of discussing the particularity and characteristics of their oeuvre.

No specific prior knowledge is required.
