Video-based Interaction Analysis (B-KUL-F0CD6A)

Aims
Upon completing this course, students will be able to:
- Independently create their own dataset and find their way through existing datasets of spoken interaction
- Use transcription and annotation tools to enrich video data
- Use data analysis and visualization techniques
- Critically reflect on methods for interactional linguistic research
Previous knowledge
Be familiar with the core concepts of general linguistics

Activities
6 ects. Video-based Interaction Analysis (B-KUL-F0CD6a)
Content
In this course we invite students to participate in the different phases of multimodal interaction research. Under the guidance of the didactic team, students collect video data from spoken interaction, transcribe and annotate that data, and finally present the analysis of the annotation work in an oral and written report. Each phase (data collection, transcription, annotation, analysis) consists of a theoretical lecture in which the basic principles are discussed and a series of seminars in which students apply those principles to their own material. In this course, students learn how to collect high-quality video data in an ethically responsible way. In addition, they learn which tools and techniques they can use to reveal patterns and mechanisms of spoken language (including hand gestures, body posture, gaze direction, etc.).
Course material
A reader with relevant methodological papers and tutorials will be made available on Toledo.
Language of instruction: more information
This course is offered in English because it (a) concerns a methodological training that will be largely based on English source material and tutorials, and (b) should be possible for non-Dutch speaking (doctoral) students to take this course.
Format: more information
A combination of introductory lectures in which the basic components are explained, with hands-on practical work in a research project. In this project, students will complete the different stages of a research process, including data collection, transcription, annotation and analysis of audiovisual material.
Evaluation
Evaluation: Video-based Interaction Analysis (B-KUL-F2CD6a)
Explanation
Students are assessed on the following components:
- Quality and correctness of the transcription and annotation of the data
- Oral presentation of the data analysis
- Critical reflection on all phases (data collection, transcription, annotation, analysis) in a paper
Information about retaking exams
During the second examination period, students are assessed on:
- Quality and correctness of the data transcription and annotation
- Critical reflection on all phases (data collection, transcription, annotation, analysis) in a paper
The oral presentation is no longer part of the evaluation in this examination period.
