Aims
Students
- will gain insight into the history of popular literature in its interactions with other media.
- will be introduced to the workings of cultural industries and be able to demonstrate it through case studies.
- will be able to grasp the interaction between word and image in popular literary genres such as comics and photo novels.

Basic knowledge of literary-theoretical problems as discussed in Literary Theory in BA1 and BA2.

Content
This course offers an introduction to the interaction between literature and other non-textual media. It aims to provide both a theoretical introduction to key concepts (cultural industry, seriality, genre, intermediality, etc.) and the study of a number of historical case studies. It focusus on genres of popular literature that blend word and image, from serial fiction to comics, photo-novels and graphic novels. The course begins with a theoretical and historical section on popular literature as 1) cultural industry and 2) serial production. It then zooms in on a number of media such as serial novels, illustrated magazines, graphic novels, film-photonovels, examined in an inter- and transmedial perspective. It further sheds light on the materiality of those media and their strong interaction with readers and audiences.

The exam is written and includes two parts:
- Content questions (open answers where theory is applied to examples)
- Detail questions (short answers on key concepts, authors or works)
