From academic year 2024-2025, Philosophical Skills (3 ECTS) will become a mandatory course in the programme, which expands to 63 ECTS. New students take the course at the start of the programme. Students previously and continuously enrolled do not have to take the course.
In 2020-2021 the Institute of Philosophy started with a new Bachelor of Philosophy programme (180 ECTS). While the new programme is introduced step by step (in 2020-2021 the 1st stage, in 2021-2022 the 2nd stage, and in 2022-2023 the 3rd stage), the old programme will phase out. This programme reform obviously affected the BA Abridged programme, which consists of core courses from the different stages of the full BA programme.
Students who start with the BA Abridged programme in 2023-2024 are not affected at all by the programme reform; they take the new programme as it is listed below.
Students who started the programme before this year may have to take the transitional measures into account when composing their individual study programme (ISP). Especially students who started before 2021-2022 will feel the impact of the reform.
As a general rule, students can only graduate in the BA Abridged programme if their ISP meets the three following conditions: (1) it counts at least 63 credits in total; (2) it meets the actual requirements with regard to historical-philosophical and systematic-philosophical courses; (3) the Bachelor’s Paper with Seminar is included.
Programme changes and transitional measures
1) Most old courses were replaced by new equivalents.
- W0EA1A Logic (5 ECTS) was replaced by W0W03A Logic (6 ECTS).
- W0EB3A Phenomenology and Contemporary Continental Philosophy (5 ECTS) was replaced by W0W31A Phenomenology (6 ECTS).
- W0EA6A Metaphysics (5 ECTS) was replaced by W0W22A Metaphysics (6 ECTS).
- W0EA5A Philosophical Anthropology (5 ECTS) was replaced by W0W28A Philosophical Anthropology: Continental Approaches (6 ECTS).
- W0EA2A Introduction to Ethics (5 ECTS) was replaced by W0W04A Ethics (6 ECTS).
- W0EP2A Political Philosophy (5 ECTS) was replaced by W0W27A Political Philosophy (6 ECTS).
- W0EB2A Contemporary Anglo-American Philosophy (5 ECTS) was replaced by W0W36A Analytic Philosophy and Philosophy of Language (6 ECTS).
- W0EA8A History of Philosophy: Ancient Philosophy (5 ECTS) was replaced by W0W20A Ancient Philosophy (6 ECTS).
- W0EA9A History of Philosophy: Medieval Philosophy (5 ECTS) was replaced by W0W24A Medieval Philosophy (6 ECTS).
Students who did pass/tolerate the old courses may not book the new courses in their ISP; neither should they apply for an exemption, since the old courses remain automatically included in their ISP and Study Progress File.
Old courses and corresponding new courses often have a different number of credits. These differences can be compensated in the Electives group, by taking more or fewer electives. Students can only graduate if they have at least 63 credits in total and if their ISP meets all the course requirements.
2) Some old courses were merged into one new course.
W0EA3A Theory of Knowledge (5 ECTS) and W0EA4A Philosophy of Science (5 ECTS) were merged into W0W06A Epistemology and Philosophy of Science (6 ECTS).
- W0EB1A History of Philosophy: Modern Philosophy I (5 ECTS) and W0AO0A History of Philosophy: Modern Philosophy II (5 ECTS) were merged into one new course W0W32B Modern Philosophy (6 ECTS).
Students who did pass/tolerate an old course may not book the new (combined) course in their ISP; neither should they apply for an exemption, since the old course remains automatically included in their ISP and Study Progress File.-
