1.4 reflects critically on the internal context of the organization and on how the management of work and employees can influence the internal context to make the organization function better and/or to increase well-being of employees.

2.1 analyzes work and organization related strategic problems and questions, taking into account the specific business context, the stakeholders involved (managers, employees, trade unions, advisors, policy, ...) and the wider environment in which the organization operates.

2.2 formulates a substantiated solution for work and organization related strategic problems and questions based on scientific knowledge and insight into the management of work and employees, and takes into account the specific business context, the stakeholders involved (managers, employees, trade unions, advisors, policy, ...) and the wider environment in which the organization operates.

2.4 takes - based on scientific knowledge and insight into the management of work and employees - a well-founded view on current societal work related problems.

2.5 reflects critically about the external context of the organization and how the management of work and employees can be geared to this in order to make the organization function better and/or to increase well-being of people on the labor market.

3.1 plans, organizes, evaluates and optimizes processes related to the inflow (personnel planning, recruitment, selection), development (training, assessment, remuneration) and outflow (dismissal, outplacement) of staff, and takes into account the specific business context and the integration of the different processes while planning, organizing and evaluating the processes regarding inflow, development and outflow of staff.

4.1 reflects critically on how social, international and organizational trends influence the organization's policy related to the management of work and employees in the organization, taking into account (consequences for) the stakeholders involved.

7.2 discusses the social, ethic and sustainability aspects of the management of work and employees, analyses an organization's policy on the basis of these aspects and formulates suggestions for improvement. 

8.2 organises, as a member of a team of two students, the advisory project for an SME and sets up a detailed and realistic plan, taking into account the context of the question, the scope of the project, the conditions, the limitations, the expected quality and the means available. 

8.4 takes responsibility for his/her role in the team and carries out his/her part of the project on time. 

8.6 participates constructively in meetings with the team and with others who are involved in the project.

9.2 chooses and uses the appropriate communication channels and means and adjusts both the communication content and style to the audience and the communication goal. 

10.3 reflects critically on how important evolutions and innovations in the management of work and employees can be translated into the organization's policy, taking into account the specific business context and the stakeholders involved.

The course aims not only to develop knowledge, but also has the objective to develop the ability to reflect critically and to apply the accumulated knowledge in real business settings.

Students are expected to perform the following learning activities:

  • The students acquire and integrate knowledge on the strategic management of work and employees, based upon information provided during the lectures and the course material.
  • The students use the acquired knowledge to solve and critically reflect on cases in class, and to execute a consultancy assignment related to the management of work and employees in a small and medium sized enterprise (SME).
  • The students participate actively during the lectures.

Features of evaluation and determination of final grades

The evaluation consists of two parts:
(1) A consultancy assignment regarding the management of work and employees (in groups of two students) for a small and medium sized enterprise, based upon the knowledge acquired during the courses and via the handbook. All information on this assignment (format, evaluation criteria, deadline, etc.) will be communicated during the first lecture and via Toledo (50%).
(2) A closed book written exam (50%).

All assessment activities need to be taken in order to receive a score. Late submission of the assignment is equal to 'not taken'.

The final grade is calculated and expressed as an integer number on 20.

 

The evaluation and calculation of the result for the 2nd exam opportunity are the same as for the 1st exam opportunity, as explained under the tab 'Explanation'.
