The internship is an opportunity to gain professional experience and to conduct research that will form the empirical basis of the student's master's thesis. During the internship the student gains practical or applied knowledge of the field of development from an anthropological perspective.

Upon completion of the internship, the students has demonstrated their ability to:
- contact an organisation of their interest (preferably in the context of development) and to establish a working relationship in preparation of the internship;
- participate in the daily work of an organisation;
- participate in the local reality (whether at home or abroad) of their informants; and in doing so,
- define and sharpen the research terms or internship objectives according to the context and perspective of the people involved;
- apply the theoretical knowledge gained both in mandatory and elective courses to the field experience and practice ;
- further develop a critical reflection on his/her own cultural embeddedness;
- be aware of the different perspectives to approach a developmental question.

The aims, requirements and evaluation of the internship will be explained during the internship info session at the start of the academic year.

The internship must be a research internship that is recognised within the CADES programme and is part of the personal track of the student. The subject of the research internship and the master's thesis has to be connected to the themes, questions and discussions that are central to the CADES programme.

Students
- are registered for the advanced Master in Cultural Anthropology and Development Studies (CADES);
- are selected based on an internship proposal that is submitted to the internship commission on the respective deadlines. The criteria and deadlines of the internship proposal are explained during the info session and are available on the CADES community on Toledo (under Internship -> Guidelines).

The internship is an opportunity to gain professional experience in an NGO, International Organisation, Development Organisation, Civil society, university, research institute, and it is mainly a research internship. The student explores specific development issues (from local knowledge systems) through scientific research including participant observation, interviews, etc. The student will therefore be able to test and discuss - with the people involved in, and/or affected by the research topic - the questions, themes, and problems that arose during the CADES programme. The aim is for the student to be emerged in the research's context(s) and reality/ies and that this experience and exchange lead to a thorough reflection and a better understanding of the problems from the perspective of the respective people and of their positions that are informed culturally, economically, politically, etc. This research will form the basis of the student’s Master's thesis and of course of the internship report.

A list with essential literature is available on Toledo.

The student is expected to attend briefing and debriefing sessions organised by the internship coordinator.
The student participates in the work of the organisation he or she interns in for a minimum of 6 weeks (or 30 working days). The research he or she engages in for his or her master thesis can be equal to the work he or she is involved in or research contacts can be facilitated by the organisation. The student makes these arrangements with the organisation him- or herself. The student submits an internship proposal outlining the research, the internship objectives as outlined in the internship guidelines, available on Toledo.
The student is expected to grasp research opportunities in formal and informal situations that he or she actively seeks.
The student stays in contact with the internship coordinator and regularly reports on the course of the internship. Students are expected to inform the internship coordinator at least upon arrival, halfway the internship and at the end, and make an appointment for a meeting with the coordinator upon their return.

The modalities of the internship are clearly communicated during the information session at the start of the semester, and will be available on Toledo.

Evaluation

Evaluation: Internship - Short-Term (B-KUL-S2D76b)

Type : Continuous assessment without exam during the examination period
Description of evaluation : Report, Participation during contact hours, Process evaluation

The internship is evaluated by the internship coordinator as explained in the Internship Guidelines, available on Toledo. Scores are always represented with whole numbers on a scale from 0 to 20, with 10 being the passing grade.

Grades will be calculated based on an evaluation of the following elements:
1. the student's involvement in the sessions organised before and after the internship (assessed by the internship coordinator) and the internship proposal
2. the student's engagement in his or her internship (a written 1 page evaluation of the organisation is required- students who receive a Travel Grant use the evaluation that is part of the VLIR-UOS file); and on
3. the student's reflection on his own track, which is detailed in
4. the student's internship report
5. a discussion/presentation of the report.

Formal requirements of the report
The final internship report is (electronically) submitted on the first Monday of the examination period in which the student wishes to obtain a grade for the internship.
This report is made out of approximately  4000 words and contains:

- a description and reflection of the methods and techniques used;
- a sketch of the local context (socially and culturally especially in relation to the research);
- a thourough reflection on the role and positionality of the participant within the organisation and host setting

- an analysis on achieving the internship objectives (and a relfection on why not)

- a demonstration of the link with the CADES programme;
- a brief synopsis of the research results;
- a thorough analytic and theoretical reflection on these results.

The student is encouraged to complete this report in a creative way. This can be done as a personal account, using excerpts of the internee’s personal and research diary, fitting the report in a story format or writing up the report with more theoretical references,…
Deadline for the report is the 1st Moday of the start of the examination period in which the student wishes to obtain a grade for the internship. If the report is submitted after the deadline the overall grade will result in an 'NA'-score (not participated) and the report will be considered for the third examination period.
The student will be invited to share his/her internship experience with his/her fellow students and the new CADES students during an information session, organised in discussion with the CADES coordinators.

Students cannot resit the internship itself. They can, however, retake their internship report.
