This course evaluates the following learning outcomes:

The student

1.3 (SM) recognises ‘wicked’ problems (poverty, inequality, biodiversity, pollution,…) and takes them into account when developing a sustainability policy

2.1 (SM) can, based on the main principles of sustainability, reflect critically on organisational policy choices

2.2 (SM) can, based on the main principles of sustainability, reflect critically on regulatory policy choices

2.3 (SM) can reflect critically on ‘wicked’ problems (poverty, inequality, biodiversity, pollution,…)

4.1 (SM) reflects critically on the impact of societal, international and organisational trends on the sustainability policy of an organisation, while taking into account the consequences for the relevant stakeholders

4.2 (SM) follows recent news and information on sustainability topics

10.1 (SM) keeps his/her knowledge regarding sustainability topics up-to-date based on practice-oriented, policy-oriented and scientific information sources

10.2 (SM) reflects critically on the way important trends and innovations regarding sustainability can be translated in organisational policy development

 

Upon completion of this course, the student can:

  • assess and quantify the environmental impact using specific indicators (e.g. eco indicators, interpretation of LCA output, etc.).
  • assess a technique for the management of waste and materials, water, air, soil pollution within a given context using his/her knowledge of a wide range of management techniques.
  • propose process-integrated and/or structural improvements to decrease/prevent emissions and waste flows as well as consumption of raw materials and energy, paying attention to the principles of the circular economy.

This course builds on the course Sustainable management (B-KUL-HMA77A) course offered in the first semester.

Introduction

differentiated content, according to the student's prior knowledge in environmental sciences. After completing some modules, all students are expected to have sufficient background knowledge to keep up with the content of the classes

 

Treatment and management of environmental pollution

  • Waste and materials management –- urban mining
  • Waste water treatment
  • Soil and groundwater remediation
  • Treatment of air emissions

The focus will not only be on end-of-pipe technologies, but also on resource recovery and recycling.

 

Sustainable product management

 

  • Instruments to evaluate the environmental impact of technologies

              - Life cycle assessment (LCA)

              - Carbon footprinting

              - ….

  • Ecodesign

Company visit - Guest lecture - Interactive lecture

Interactive plenary course. Students are encouraged to participate actively in the sessions by means of class discussions, polls, exercises etc.

If feasible, a company visit will also be organized.

Evaluation characteristics and Determination final result

 

Written exam. It is not allowed to use course material.  The exam includes open questions and multiple choice questions on the various topics covered in the course.

For the multiple choice questions, a guess correction is applied: for a correct answer : +1/2 ; for a wrong answer:  -1/6 ; for a question not answered : 0.

The features of the evaluation and determination of grades are identical to those of the first examination opportunity, as described in the tab 'Explanation'.
