Having completed Spanish Language Proficiency IB or having active knowledge of 3500 words and morphology/morphosyntax corresponding to CEFR levels A2-B1.

Near-native speakers of Dutch for contrastive exercises Dutch/Spanish and the vocabulary book Portavoces, near-native speakers of English work with an English translation.

In addition to listening and speaking skills, there is now also more focus on writing skills (opinion texts).

Listening skills are improved by listening to authentic reports…

Standard language is expanded with colloquial language (softening, strengthening, and use of the indirect object).

Text cohesion and coherence are studied.

Revision of content, structure, style, and register is central, and students also learn metalanguage to provide feedback.

Several topics within pragmatics are discussed, including politeness, turn-taking in conversations…

Students independently review conjunctions and subordinating conjunctions, as well as the use of modes in subordinate clauses.

In the class, communication is conducted in Spanish. The vocabulary handbook, as well as other instructional materials like connectors, also include translations to Dutch, and many contrastive exercises require the student to be a near-native speaker of Dutch. For near-native speakers of English, there is an English translation available.

Flipped classroom

Students are required to independently process several articles/topics  and vocabulary; they are given the opportunity to ask questions and complete exercises in class.
