a. Course rationale

This translation seminar offers students a thorough introduction into the concepts, methods and tools which are relevant for the translation of specialised texts from the fields of finance and economics (Spanish-French).

c. Key objectives of the course and competence levels to be attained

1. Students are able to find, select and critically use the available heuristic devices (specialised dictionaries, terminological databases, parallel texts). They can compile a portfolio with a parallel corpus and a modest terminological database. Competence level 3
2. Students are able to use translation tools such as SDL MultiTerm, Studio and WordSmith Tools (or TextSTAT). Competence level 3
3. Students expand their active and passive knowledge of the specialised terminology and phraseology that is relevant for the areas of specialism discussed in class. Competence level 2
4. Students can efficiently and adequately translate specialised texts from the domains of finance and economics (Spanish-French). They are able to generate translations that meet professional standards of quality, style and presentation. Competence level 3
5. Students can correct and edit translations that are written in French; they can comment on the applied translation strategies, using the appropriate metalanguage. Competence level 3

The course is meant for students with a good knowledge of Spanish (C1) and French (C2).

A selection of the following topics will be discussed: balance of payments, labour market, exchange rates, derivatives, profit-and-loss accounts of financial entities, consolidated financial statements, audit reports, articles on stock exchange etc.

Digital study material published on HUBwise (learning platform).

Blended learning (conceptual and methodological introductions; learning platform; individual tutoring; evaluation sessions). E-learning: students work independently on a portfolio (selection and translation of articles on stock exchange; parallel corpus; terminological database; comment).

Type : Continuous assessment without exam during the examination period


Continuous evaluation. Portfolio: translations different modules; articles on stock exchange, translation, database. The use of AI tools is not allowed.
Estimated work load: ±150 hours.

Resit: extra work on the portfolio.
