Students are able to:

  • acquire knowledge about France's position in the world, understand it, and contextualize it in all its aspects;
  • locate, correctly interpret, assess, and process sources on the covered topics;
  • deliver an oral presentation on a topic closely related to the covered material;
  • actively follow current events related to France and the Francophonie and report on them orally.

Students must have passed the course French: Culture I.

This course is dedicated to "La France dans le monde" (France in the World). The first part delves into France's foreign relations. Students will acquire a number of general concepts and mechanisms, which will then be applied to France. Specific topics that will be covered include: the French grandeur as an ideal of De Gaulle; Franco-German relations and France's European policy; attitudes towards the United States and NATO.

The second part addresses the Francophonie, an asset for France in terms of "soft power." The following topics will be discussed: French colonization and the relationship between France and its former colonies; the concept of Francophonie and the controversy surrounding it; la “Françafrique”; DROM-COM (French overseas departments and territories), etc.

Students are expected to give an oral presentation on a topic related to the covered material. Furthermore, they will prepare for the lectures and actively follow current events related to France and the Francophonie.
