Content
If you want to learn a language, you have to acquire an insight into the geographical, economic, social, cultural and political reality of the community of (native) speakers of that language. This course offers a survey of this reality in the United Kingdom. Present-day situations are, whenever relevant, related to their historical background.

Discussion - Traditional lecture
The course is taught in the form of an interactive lecture.The handbook forms the basic study material, which the students should go through independently. In class selected chapters are dealt with, extra materials will be offered, a broader insight will be provided, and links will be pointed out between the various themes.
The combination of the handbook, class materials and the course notes taken by the students are vital to successfully taking the exam. Students also have to keep abreast of recent developments in British society through printed, audiovisual and online media.
Evaluation
Evaluation: English: Culture I A (B-KUL-H75844)
Explanation
The evaluation consists of the following components:
1. Written exam (80%)
2. Paper on current events (20%)
Students must have taken part in both components in order to pass the course. Those who do not take part in the exam will receive an NA score ("niet afgelegd"/"not taken"). Those who do not submit the paper will receive a zero score for the paper and a total score of max. 9/20.
Information about retaking exams
The evaluation will be similar in the September exam session to the one in the January exam session. Students who obtained a score of min. 10/20 for the paper will not need to submit a new one.
