If you want to learn a language, you have to acquire an insight into the geographical, economic, social, cultural and political reality of the community of (native) speakers of that language. This course offers a survey of this reality in the United Kingdom. Present-day situations are, whenever relevant, related to their historical background.

Discussion - Traditional lecture

The course is taught in the form of an interactive lecture. The handbook forms the basic study material, which the students should go through independently. In class selected chapters are dealt with, extra materials will be offered, a broader insight will be provided, and links will be pointed out between the various themes.

The combination of the handbook, class materials and the course notes taken by the students are vital to successfully taking the exam. Students also have to keep abreast of recent developments in British society through printed, audiovisual and online media.
