Aims
Students can
• compare theories and research practices on the social meaning of (contact-induced) language variation and change;
• describe trends and innovation in research into the social meaning of (contact-induced) language variation and change;
• describe, investigate and assess the mechanisms of social inclusion and exclusion through language;
• synthesize insights on a specific sub-theme of research on inclusion and exclusion through language;
• assess the applied methodology in a sociolinguistic research article;
• set up a research design to answer a research question in the field of language in society.

Content
In this course, we highlight, evaluate and design research on the social meaning of (contact-induced) language variation and change. We pay attention to:
• innovations: e.g. developmental sociolinguistics, cognitive sociolinguistics, usage-based contact linguistics;
• research perspectives: production, perception, attitude.

Content
Topics to be addressed as part of the theme can for instance include but are not restricted to:
- language, leadership, and professional identity
- language and ideology, e.g. concerning standardization & accents
- accessible communication
- political correct language use
- offensive language use
- linguistic bias & linguistic profiling (e.g. language and racism, migration, gender, ...)
- globalization, localization and glocalization, including the power of language and the rise of English
- (forensic linguistics)
- (macro and micro policy)
- (bilingual education)
