The primary goals of the course are the following:

Improving the students' technical knowledge about the different aspects of smart cities e.g. energy, mobility and buildings,
Giving the students an overview of current smart city related projects,
Enabling students to develop a vision on which steps have to be taken towards 2020-2030 to improve the ‘smartness’ of European cities.

The content of the course will be a mix of technical aspects, business cases and existing smart city initiatives. Subjects will include:
-       A general ‘What is a smart city’ session
-       Intelligent public lighting technologies,
-       Mobility and electric vehicles
-       ICT requirements in a smart city
-       On-going smart city initiatives
-       Living labs and business concepts
-       Energy efficient buildings and homes

Aside, a visit to a city, where there are a lot of smart city initiatives are being conducted, can be planned.

Evaluation for the master students will be an assignment made in groups of 3-4. The subject could e.g. be: Evaluating the potential of e.g. mobility, demand response or intelligent lighting in a certain European city. The students will focus on working out a specific business case and/or develop a strategic action plan.

No 2nd examination opportunity.

All parts of this course are compulsory.

  •     Failing to participate, without acceptable explanation, in one part, will lead to zero on the that part.
  •     Failing to participate, without acceptable explanation, in two or more parts, will lead to a "no evaluation" for the course.
  •     There is no possibility to re-evaluate this course in september.
