This course deals with a number of ethical aspects of statistics. It also focuses on how to communicate (both written and orally) statistical results. These are skills that a statistician/data scientist needs to possess in order to be an effective collaborator and/or consultant. This course also offers examples of the use and misuse of statistics, and provides students hands-on statistics/data science consulting projects that need to be analyzed and reported during the course period.

Students should have good knowledge about the most widely used statistical techniques (exploratory data analysis, regression, analysis of variance, linear and generalized linear models, multivariate analysis). They should also know how these techniques are applied with the help of statistical software packages.

Beginning conditions: The set of basic courses of the Msc Statistics program (Basic concepts of statistical modelling, Statistical software, Linear models: regression analysis and analysis of variance, Multivariate analysis, Generalized linear models) form a sufficient prerequisite.

This course is identical to the following courses:
G0B66B : Statistical Consulting

Part I: Lectures
Lecture 1: Communication skills

Lecture 2: Guest lecture

Lecture 3: Ethical aspects of consulting

Lecture 4: Written reporting / Oral Presentation

Lecture 5: Use and Misuse of Statistics

Part II: Group presentations at the yearly LSTAT datathon

In small groups, a statistics/data science project (provided at the yearly LStat datathon) needs to be analysed and a presentation has to be prepared and given to a jury. After the presentation, a Q&A session will take place about the project. Attendance to these presentations are mandatory.

Part III: Individual presentations & report

For every student, 3 (or more) real-life case studies will be provided, where only 1 case study has to be analysed and a presentation (+ report) has to be prepared. After the presentation, a Q&A session will take place about the case study.

During the lectures the students get an overview of what is important in statistical consulting (besides technical statistical knowledge). Videotapes are shown and analysed with good and less than optimal consultant behaviour.
The case studies (for which a report has to be made and presented for an audience) train the students in technical and communication skills.
