Master's Thesis Master of Criminology (B-KUL-C02J2A)
Aims
One identifies the subject of the Master's Thesis within one of the fields of study of the master programme. The aim is to offer the student the occasion to specialise in a field of criminology and to provide a personal scientific contribution in this area of criminological competence. The seminar offers substantive accompaniment of the topic selection of the Master's Thesis and of all phases of the development of the master test. The support consists partly in the contribution of the process of scientific activity and partly in the control of the substantive quality and progress of the Master's Thesis.
Previous knowledge
Knowledge:
Basics of criminology as a science, basic knowledge of heuristics of scientific activity and data collecting/analyzing methods within the area of criminological competence
Capacity:
Topic selection by motivation, basic skills for scientific research (rudiments of data collecting, selecting and design, analyzing and reporting)
Attitude:Personal engagement, open and critical attitude, problemsolved thinking and especially interest into the particular problems concerning law enforcement.

Content
The student will perform independent research in order to:
- evolve from the problem into the research question with particular attention to learn to identify the gaps in the current knowledge in the field of one of the three research domains the student chooses;
- design a way to answer the research question; to collect and analyse the data and to polish its restrictions in this respect
- report according to scientific standards.

2.5 ects. Seminar: "Support as regards to Topic Selection, Design and Datacollection" (B-KUL-C02J3a)
Content
The student will perform independent research in order to:
- evolve from the problem into the research question with particular attention to learn to identify the gaps in the current knowledge in the field of one of the three research domains the student chooses;
- design a way to answer the research question; to collect and analyse the data and to polish its restrictions in this respect
- report according to scientific standards.

The specific contents of this seminar is stipulated by the current research lines of the promoters actively within one of the fields of study.. The contribution of the tutors also situates himself in the field of the process accompaniment of the Master's Thesis. In particular more accompaniment and mainly positively critical feedback is ordered at:
- the evolvement from the problem into the research question with particular attention to learn to identify the gaps in the current knowledge in the field of criminality and (un)security
- the design to answer the research question
- the collection and analysis of data and polishes its restrictions in this respect.

- design a way to answer the research question; to collect and analyse the data and to polish its restrictions in this respect
- report according to scientific standards.
