Christian Worship and Spirituality (B-KUL-A07G7B)
Aims
Students:
- reflect about the intrinsic correspondence between liturgy and spirituality;
- distinguish between different spiritual meanings and symbols of individual rites;
- analyse and comment upon texts which establish a clear link between worship and the spiritual life;
- formulate how worship influences their own spirituality, and how their spirituality interacts with worship services;
- confront their own biases concerning the relation between spirituality and liturgy with authoritative voices from both the Christian tradition and contemporary scholars;
- engage with the importance of monasticism for maintaining a connection between worship and a spiritual life;
- interpret different forms of devotions from the past and the present in view of contemporary sociocultural developments;
- evaluate different theories which connect worship, spirituality and (pastoral) praxis;
- inquire into the contribution of popular religiosity to the Christian religion and its spirituality;
- develop a critical position towards theological frameworks and anthropological theories engaging popular religion.

Content
This course consists of three modules:
(1) theological perspectives on liturgical spirituality and the liturgical year (J. Geldhof)
(2) the evangelical counsels (M. Hovde)
(3) Catholic devotions and popular culture (H. Geybels)
Course material
All material students need for this course, will be made available trough Toledo and/or Leganto.
Format: more information
The course will consist of ageneral introductory session at the beginning and a panel discussion at the end of the semester, where the different perspectives on worship and spirituality will be integrated.
Each module is expected to comprise of three, four or five classes.

Explanation
Students receive 1 to 3 broad and reflexive questions per module. They write their answers to these questions in the form of small essays.
