Sight Translation and Introduction to Simultaneous Interpreting Arabic (B-KUL-YL0407)
Aims
Students can
- provide sight translation into Dutch and into Arabic;
- interpret short, slow speeches from the foreign language into Dutch and vice versa (‘beginner’ simultaneous),
- fluently, spontaneously, accurately and purposefully use their foreign language in oral communication
- functionally and creatively apply the knowledge of the working language.
- skilfully handle Dutch in diverse translation and interpretation contexts at the advanced level of a professional native speaker.
- apply an advanced knowledge of the economic, business, political, cultural and social context of the linguistic region in a concrete translation or interpreting context.
- apply the correct terminology according to the cultural and institutional context.
- detect intercultural differences and take them into account when translating and interpreting.
- independently monitor changes in the political, economic, social and cultural context of the foreign linguistic region, and its conceptual framework.
Previous knowledge
The student masters Dutch and Arabic and has a broad knowledge of source and target cultures and good listening and speaking skills. The student has an interest in intercultural communication and oral interaction.
The student is expected to master the required competencies of the courses Basic Interpreting Skills and Technology and Terminology Management for Interpreters and to also master the skills of (at least) the first semester of the course Consecutive Interpreting and Dialogue Interpreting Arabic.

4 ects. Sight Translation and Introduction to Simultaneous Interpreting Arabic (B-KUL-YL3407)
Content
Students learn to provide sight translation and are introduced to the technique of simultaneous interpreting, including closing and shadowing.
Simultaneous interpreting of short and slow speeches (both in Dutch and Arabic).
During this course, students are introduced to the world of simultaneous interpreting. Fluent sight translations are an important objective of this course, whilst also being a means to expand the students’ vocabulary, to expand their knowledge of current affairs and to improve their fluency.
This way, this learning activity forms a solid foundation for simultaneous interpreting.
Speeches covering various topics serve as a basis to teach students the necessary skills for simultaneous interpreting. A broad range of topics will be covered during classes.
Specific attention will be paid to:
- Correct and faithful representation of the speech into Dutch and Arabic,
- Fluent and correct language use in Dutch and Arabic,
- Speaking techniques and communicative skills.

Explanation
Continuous assessment
Exam consisting of the following components:
1.Sight Translation
1.1 Into Dutch
1.2 Into Arabic
2.Simultaneous interpretation
2.1 Into Dutch
2.2 Into Arabic
Weighing:
10% Continuous assessment
40% Sight translation
50% Simultaneous interpretation
If the grade for one of the exam components (sight translation, simultaneous interpreting) is lower than or equal to 7/20, deliberation is not possible, resulting in failing the course unit as a whole.
Information about retaking exams
Continuous assessment will not count towards the final grade of the resists. Thus, the exam itself counts for 100% of the result.
Weighing:
45% sight translation
55% simultaneous interpretation
If the grade for one of the exam components (sight translation, simultaneous interpreting) is lower than or equal to 7/20, deliberation is not possible, resulting in failing the course unit as a whole.
