The course is taught in the first semester and is the stepping stone to Intensive Course in Literary Translation in the second semester.

In this practical translation workshop, students practise translating literary fiction in various forms and styles, acquiring the basic skills of literary translation: reading, analysing, researching, identifying translation problems and defining strategies, applying translation techniques, recognising and representing styles, dealing with linguistic norms and translation conventions, and producing a well-crafted and responsible translation that can take its place as a fully-fledged text in the target culture. The student learns to define his/her position towards the author, the client and the reader. Through reflection and exchange of ideas on translation opinions and translation decisions, he/she learns to look critically at his/her own translations and those of others, to justify choices and decisions. Finally, he/she also develops the ability to correct and revise his/her own and others' translations.

The working methods are diverse: individual preparation and translation, collective or duo translation with reporting, discussion, mutual feedback/revision, etc.

Evaluation

Evaluation: Literary Translation Italian (B-KUL-YL7335)

Type : Continuous assessment without exam during the examination period
Description of evaluation : Paper/Project, Self assessment/Peer assessment, Participation during contact hours, Process evaluation


Students are expected to attend the lectures (on campus/online) as well as to submit by e-mail the translation exercises in preparation of the lectures. This part of the continuous assessment counts for ten of the twenty points of the final score.

The second part of the continuous assessment consists of min. four translation exercises (10/20 of the final score). In assigning the score for the continuous assessment, the following criteria are used on the basis of a largely holistic evaluation system:

  • quality and quantity of the translation exercises submitted by the student
  • active and constructive collaboration during the lectures
  • accuracy of the translation
  • accuracy of the revision (and post-editing)
  • correct and creative use of language
  • creative, problem-solving and research-oriented attitude
  • attention to genre specificity
  • attention to the needs of the target audience

The modalities regarding the use of AI for each assignment will be provided via Toledo/Ultra.

If the student did not attend to the contact hours or if he or she obtained a fail mark for the first examination opportunity, all translation assignments and all the translations discussed during the contact hours, are to be submitted (or revised and resubmitted) by 16 August.
