This course introduces the students to the various forms of audio-visual translation. The emphasis is on interlingual subtitling, but other forms, such as dubbing, audio description and subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing, are also discussed.

 

Due to the hands-on nature of audio-visual translation, the course focuses more on practical exercises and less on theory. These exercises mainly concern interlingual subtitling. In a first stage, students acquire an understanding of the basic rules of subtitling. They then become acquainted with the main functions of the subtitling software used. As an application of the first two phases of the module and in preparation for the subtitling assignments, students analyse already existing subtitles. Finally, in an imposed exercise, they have to subtitle a few programmes themselves, applying the acquired knowledge and skills in practice. During the imposed exercises, students are individually guided by the teacher.

 

Evaluation is based on active participation during the classes, the work delivered and the progress made by the student during the module.

All necessary study materials will be provided by the teacher.

Type : Continuous assessment without exam during the examination period

Non-participation in any of the components of the continuous assessment results in an NA (not attended) score for the entire course.

If the subtitles are insufficient with respect to quantity and/or quality, the student will be allowed to submit a corrected version after having consulted the teacher.

 

Students who did not participate in the continuous assessment activities will not have a second examination opportunity.
