Content
The course describes and studies the intense relationship between sports and economy. The economic importance of sport is looked at in a broader framework. We start with the macroeconomic meaning and the relationship with economic growth and "emerging markets". We situate the industry of sports goods within the framework of international economy. The extension of recreational sports, the stimulants from the government and the consequences of the demand for sport linked to the phenomenon of free time and purchasing power are analyzed and placed in a broader framework. A major part of the attention is given to the professionalization of team sports with the emphasis on the distinction between the American and European professional sports competitions. In this context we look at the form of competition, labour market, the typical characteristics such as the forms of allowed market regulation, the various sources of income, merchandise, media rights, ... The last part includes the impact of sports events and Olympics on the local/regional and national economy. We make a distinction between feasibility, cost-benefit and economic impact.
