This course offers a historical overview of the approximately thousand years of Western Middle Ages and adjacent areas. This common component is interpreted in such a way that both the various components of the late Roman Empire and of the Middle Ages are explained. After a number of introductory considerations (delineation in time and space and terminology), the history is divided into two periods (500-1000 and 1000-1500), each of them with a discussion of the political-institutional, ecclesiastical-religious, socio-economic and cultural history.
