Aims

Upon completion of this course, the student will have achieved the following objectives:

  • The student has knowledge of and insight in the origins, the nature and the functioning of the EU, its institutions and its policies;
  • Building on the discussed concepts and theories, the student is able to analyze the processes of EU integration and policy making;
  • The student has a critical attitude towards European integration, the EU and its policies, and towards scientific and non-scientific analyses of the EU;
  • The student has insight in the tensions between the theory and the practice of European integration.

These objectives will be communicated to the students at the beginning of the course.

Content

This course consists of the following components:

  • History of the European Union;
  • Analysis of the function of the EU Institutions;
  • Analysis and dimensions of the European internal and external policy;
  • Theories, issues and ideas on European (des)integration.
