Aims
By the end of this course:
- the student will have gained insight into various social theories with specific attention to their visions on the working of the media and their theoretical foundation for different concrete analysis methods of media texts.
- the student can assess the different analysis methods of media texts on their own merits and compare them critically.
- the student can assess which type of analysis methode is most appropriate for a particular media text and substantiate why.
- the student can make a rudimentary analysis regardless of the media text concerned, using the methods that have been provided during the series of lectures.
These aims will be communicated to the students at the start of the lectures.

Content
Apart from the quantitative conventional content analysis the course will discuss the different forms of qualitative media text analyses: the argumentation analysis, the discourse analysis, the rhetorical analysis, the semiotic analysis, the narrative and the frame analysis. Each time we will present an example on the basis of a research article, in which one of the above mentioned forms of analysis is treated.
